Don’t mix TIN with the Tax Number! Steuer-ID / IdNr / ID-Nr is your Tax Identification Number (TIN).

The Steuer-ID (IdNr) was introduced in Germany on 1 July 2007.
Besides most common names Steuer-ID and ID-Nr
it is also called IdNr.,steuerliche Identifikationsnummer, Steuer-IdNr.,
Steueridentifikationsnummer, Steuer-Identifikationsnummer.
The Steuer-ID is also implemented in other European countries as TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number).
In my blog I use most often used names: IdNr. or Steuer-ID .
Steuer-ID versus Steuernummer
Common misunderstanding: some people confuse these two numbers: Steuer-ID (Tax Identification Number) with the Steuernummer (Tax Number).
Please distinguish the two from each other!
Steuer-ID / IdNr is never changed by marriage or relocation. It stays the same for life.
What do you need Steuer-ID / IdNr for?
Actually tax ID rather needs your employer. This number is a requirement for payment of your first salary.
That is why you will always find your tax ID on each of your pay slips (see screenshot 1).
How I find out my Steuer-ID / IdNr.?

Look at your payslip (screenshot 1).

If you ever received letters from the tax office (Finanzamt) you will also find it there (s. screenshot 2)

Have you never got the Steuer-ID / IdNr?
Then the easiest way to receive Steuer-ID / IdNr is just to wait.
After registration of your residence (Anmeldung) the
Steuer-ID / IdNr will come to you via regular post within 2-3 weeks.
However sometimes this letter can come late. The most common reason: your name on your letter box is missing or unreadable.
