"Usual" Bluecard and "small" Bluecard

Have you ever heard of the "small bluecard" and the "big bluecard"?

I admit that this separation is artificial. The German residence act (Aufenthaltsgesetz) indeed does not define "small Bluecard".

Well, let's approach the question from a different viewpoint.
Here is what you can read on the page of the German Foreign Ministry in the article Blue Card FAQ

What is the EU Blue Card? Who is eligible for it? Where can I get it?

( … )

The EU Blue Card is the main residence permit for university graduates from abroad. It is a simple and unbureaucratic procedure geared to third-country nationals keen to put their talents to use in Germany.

Requirements:

Applicants must furnish proof that they have a university degree and have been offered a job that would provide gross annual earnings for at least 56.400 euros.

In occupations where jobs vacancies for e.g. doctors, engineers, natural scientists, mathematicians, and IT-specialists cannot be filled due to a shortage of qualified personnel applicants need a job offer providing gross annual earnings in the order of only 43.992 euros.

"Small" Blue Card for IT Professionals

So if you work in the IT industry, you have the possibility of a "low start" - which means applying for the "small" Blue Card. All you need is a degree and a contract or offer of at least €43.992 per year. That is € 3,666 per month.
