Hochschulkompass - find your dream university in GermanyHigher Education Compass or Hochschulkompass - #1 German search portal for your education
In this article I try to explain the search principles on the search portal Hochschulkompass. Don't be surprised if the pictures in the internet and in this tutorial differ a little bit. The most important is the content, right?
About the Higher Education Compass
The Higher Education Compass is an information portal of the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz – HRK) that publishes information from state and state-recognised German universities about their study and doctorate opportunities and international partnerships.
All information found in the Higher Education Compass is authorised by the universities and is updated by employees at the universities themselves.
Remember that Migwork is primarly focused on the IT professions. However, you can certanly use this tutorial for all other professions as well. And now let's get started.
How to find institutionsSTEP 1 - go to Higher Education Compass and select your language
- First go to this page: www.hochschulkompass.de/en/higher-education-institutions or go to the www.hochschulkompass.de and switch there to the English language. Once the search form appears, stay with the simple search (advanced search is not necessary now).
Look at the navbar below the logo. Click on "Degree Programmes". Under Degree Programs you see "Study in Germany: Search" and then "Advanced Degree Programme Search" (Screenshot 1). This is what you need. Click on it.STEP 2 - select Degree Programs and set basic search parameters
Look the search mask (screenshot 2). Do you see those falldown menues: Mode of Admission, Degree and Study?
Mode of Admission select "without admission resriction".
Study mode - if you are not in Germany now, select "full time". Full-time study is the safest option for non-EU foreigners to obtain a national visa for study purposes.
Degree - for now you can ignore the falldown menu in the middle.
Which study programs to enter in the search field
Specify which study programs to enter in the search field.
Option 1: IT subjectsYou wish to study or continue to study some of computer related disciplnes
In case of English language, start your research with "Computer".
In case of German language, start your subject research with "Informatik".
Option 2: Other subjectsYou wish to study something else. Let's say, the business.
If you have a degree that is recognized in your country (also Bachelor), you can study any other subject in Germany***.
In case of English language, start your research with "Business".
- Business Administration
- Business Informatics
- Business Informatics/Information Systems
- Economics/Business and related subjects
- International Business Administration
- International Cultural and Business Studies
If you want to use both - English search word and the German one,
remember that the German search word in most cases differs
from the English one, sometimes significantly.
Examples: "Ökomomie" instead of "Economics", "Webentwicklung" instead of "web developement".
But no worries! Here are two links which allow you to browse over
all study subjects in German universities.
All study programms in Germany listed in English and All study programms in Germany listed in German.
The blue RESULTS button will automatically show the number of matches. It my case it can be 177 or 16. Do not mind those numbers. Just click on that blue "... RESULTS" button.
After that you will see (many) results. On screenshot 4 you can see the first two results: from the University "Hochschule Albstadt-Sigmaringen" and from the Rheinisch-Westfählische Technische Hochschule Aachen**.
How to evaluate these search results, you can read in the article Higher Education Compass - what to do with your search results.
** - terms Hochschule, Fachhochschule see explained in FAQ Study in Germany;
*** - it is a correct but simplified statement. In some cases you cannot study in Germany some completely different sublect. Although if you switch to something related, then the odds are very good that you will be allowed to study that different subject. An example: after graduating in "Computer science" in your country if you going to switch to "Business Informatics", most likely it will be unproblematic.
